Update a Portfolio

Running Portfolio Manager

If you’d like to update your portfolio, for example changing the portfolio name, description or changing portfolio positions i.e. adding, changing or removing positions, you must do this through the Portfolio Manager. Right-click on the portfolio that you want to update in the Navigation panel and select ‘Update’ from the drop-down menu.

Another way to access the update window is with the portfolio selected, go to the Actions Menu at the top of the table and select Portfolios and then select ‘Update Portfolio’.

In the top section of the Update Portfolio window you can change the name or description of the portfolio as seen in the screenshot below.

Adding and Removing Tickers

You use the ‘Update Portfolio’ window as shown above to add or remove positions from your portfolio. After opening the Update Portfolio window, portfolio positions can be changed.

As you can see in the screenshot below the middle section of the window is where you can update the position date with the pull-down menu that says ‘Position as of’. You can add new tickers by clicking the Add Shares button. You can also edit the Cash Position in the bottom left of the screen. For more detail on cash see the the section on Handling Cash below.

To remove a ticker, you will click the ‘x’ in the last column on the right in the ticker row, seen in the screenshot below.

If you want to modify positions for several dates in the same session, click ‘Update’ when you are done with a date. When you are completely done updating your portfolio, click ‘Update and Finish’.

You can also import new positions that have been exported from your brokerage house as a new date record. To do this, first select the date for the positions in the date box. Next, click the ‘Import’ button and navigate to the file with your portfolio positions. Once imported, these positions will be entered into the selected date record. Please note that this will not combine your positions with those that are already in the portfolio, but instead will override them.

Handling Cash

When you create a portfolio you can edit the cash amount in your portfolio. This can be done by clicking the edit icon in the bottom left corner of the Update Portfolio window.

portfolio

Clicking the edit button will display the window seen below, here is where you can enter the cash amount.

portfolio

If you make any trades in the portfolio you can click the ‘Adjust Cash’ box as seen below and this will adjust your cash based on the type of transaction that you select. If this box is unchecked, any transactions you make in your portfolio will not affect the portfolio’s cash balance.

Handling Buy Dates

By default the buy date for the holdings are set to the date you connect to the brokerage or import your holdings if you don’t select the multiple date options. We have a few ways to get your portfolios loaded into Stock Rover.

  1. Manually enter positions. You can find more info here.
  2. Import from a brokerage file. You can find more info here.
  3. Connect directly to your brokerage. Click here for more details.

Even though the buy date is set to the current date by default, our performance analytics can still be run. We simply calculate things as if the holdings were owned before the buy date so you can get useful historical information.

If you would like to get an exact history and have your actual buy dates, then you will have to manually enter this info or import the data from your brokerage.

The process would be to start with a clean portfolio and import the oldest brokerage statement and select the type of import you are going to do. The option with one buy date or multiple buy dates. The other option is to manually enter the holding with the oldest date and then to manually add the history for each ticker using the History tab for each ticker under the Update Portfolio window. Click here for more detail on how to adjust portfolio history.

Then after setting the history correctly you can then link your portfolio to the brokerage if you want to have the updates done automatically going forward. Click here for more detail on how link portfolios.

Change Portfolio History

You can view and edit the history of any ticker in your portfolio. Once in the update window of the portfolio, you can click on any ticker to view the history.

portfolio

Clicking the ticker opens the history tab of the ticker and will display the initial position, current position and all the history of the ticker. If you need to make an adjustment on the quantity, cost per share, basis and value you can edit the values as seen in the screenshot below by clicking into cell. If you need to remove any history you can click the x next to the line you want to remove. The initial position and the current position lines can not be removed.

portfolio

If you need to add any new history, you can do this by clicking the New Row button in the bottom left of the window. This will display the window below, where you can select either Edit Position or Enter Trade then enter the date, quantity and cost per share.

portfolio

When entering a position or a trade the date can’t be older than the initial position date.
