November 7, 2018 Printer Friendly Printer Friendly

This is the fourth in a series of blog posts describing new features we have added to Stock Rover V7. In Part 1 we described the cool new dividend and comparative statement features. In Part 2 we described several brand new features including our new Metrics Browser and keyboard shortcuts. In Part 3 we highlighted a number of refinements and improvements that makes using Stock Rover a better experience.

In this post we will focus on the Stock Rover Dashboard, which is a new feature in V7.

The Dashboard

The Stock Rover Dashboard is designed to quickly show you how your portfolios are performing within the context of how the markets are performing. When I fire up Stock Rover, the Dashboard is always my first stop. The Dashboard is divided into sections. Each section is described in turn below, starting with the Market Summary.

Market Summary

The first section in the Dashboard is the Markets Summary section, showing you how your portfolios and how the markets are performing on the current trading day. This gives you a quick idea of what the markets are doing and whether your portfolios are outperforming or underperforming the market. You can configure which of your portfolios you want to include in the dashboard via the little hamburger icon next to the Dashboard header as shown via the arrow in the image below.

Market Movers and Sector Performance

The second section of the Dashboard shows market movers on the left and sector performance on the right. The great things about this section is how easy is to shift time frame and perspective as both sections are highly configurable.

With Market Movers you can focus on whatever index you like, the time period, and whether to focus on most actives, gainers or losers. You can also sort table in different ways by clicking on the column headers.

For Sector performance, you can control the period to consider by clicking on the period indicator as shown in the image below. Similar to market movers, you can also control the sort order of the table by clicking on the column headers. Sector performance is one of my go to displays, as I find seeing how sectors are performing within the general context of the market over different time periods is very illuminating in deciphering market behavior.

Portfolio Charting

Portfolio Charting is the third section of the Dashboard. The first part of the chart is a great way to visually see the performance of your portfolio both on an absolute basis, and vs. key benchmarks such as the S&P 500. The second chart shows the value of your portfolios over time. Mousing over the charts provides additional information. Periods are easily selectable and customizable, and can range from one day to ten years. You can change the portfolios included and the benchmarks used, as well as the date range. All are highlighted on the screenshot below.

Portfolio Performance Detail

The next two sections show you in tabular form the performance of each portfolio in the selected time period. The first table display performance at the portfolio level and the second table show performance at the position level, aggregated across portfolios.

As with charting, the time frame is configurable. All the columns are sortable by clicking on the column header. You can also adjust the column widths to fit perfectly to your display by clicking the double arrows on the right side of the display as highlighted in the screenshot below.

There is a powerful tooltip available if you mouse over a position. The tooltip will show you your overall gain since purchase, calculated from your cost basis. The tooltip will also show your gain in the selected reporting period, which you can control. If a position is held in multiple portfolios, each portfolio position is listed separately. The screenshot below shows an example of this.

Portfolio Performance by Sector or Equity Type

You can also group the positions by sector or by equity type. This done by right clicking on any table column in the position table and the selecting ‘Group by Sector’ or ‘Group by Equity Type’. Grouping by sector for example is a very effective way to see your sector exposure, as well as your portfolio performance in each sector that your own. The screenshot below shows an example of grouping by sector.

Summary

The Dashboard is a powerful way to quickly see how your portfolios are performing within the context of the market, and how the markets themselves are performing. The dashboard is highly configurable, and its easy ability to change market viewpoints and time periods is a tremendous aid in adding further insight and perspective into your portfolio and overall market performance.

Next up will be part 5 of this series where we will focus on Markets, which is another new feature of Stock Rover V7, designed to give you clear insight as what is happening in the markets you care about.
