Overview

Stock Rover functions as an interactive dashboard within your Internet browser. This page will introduce you to the basics of interacting with the Stock Rover web app. You can also download our PDF guide “Getting Started in Stock Rover” for a quick overview and a list of easy actions to try out.

Once you understand the paradigm of the Stock Rover user interface, the best way to get to know the program is to explore it on your own. For inspiration, see our Blog and Video Library. For guidance on specific tasks, explore our How To guide using the navigation at left. You can also email our Support Team with questions. Note that not all users are guaranteed an individualized response—please see our support policies.

The focus of this help documentation is on the Stock Rover web app; although note that we also have a simpler, complementary financial platform called Stock Rover Markets that is freely accessible from both the Stock Rover website (under menu item ‘Markets’) and from Stock Rover (by clicking ‘Market Summary’). Together, Stock Rover and Stock Rover Markets can help you accomplish a significant range of financial research tasks.

Accessing Stock Rover

You can login to Stock Rover anywhere you have Internet. Stock Rover has been tested and is supported on the following browsers:

  • Chrome 23.0 or higher
  • Firefox 16.0 or higher
  • Internet Explorer 10 or higher
  • Safari 6 or higher (Mac only)

If you are having trouble logging in to Stock Rover from one of these browsers, please try clearing your cache and refreshing the page.

You can only have one active session per account. While you are not prevented from logging in from multiple locations, you are only able to use an account from a single location at any time.

Screen Layout

The Stock Rover screen is composed of multiple panels, some of which are interdependent.

At the top of the window is a multipurpose toolbar, which includes the Start menu, a link to the Stock Rover homepage, help links, and your account information, called out in a red box below:

The row selected in the Navigation panel, on the left side of the screen, determines what dataset is loaded in the Table. If a parent item is selected in the Navigation panel, the rows in the Table will show summaries of each of the child items. For example, if ‘My Portfolios’ is selected in the Navigation panel, the Table will have rows for each of your portfolio.

When the ‘Include in Table’ checkbox is selected in the Quotes Box (above the Navigation panel), any quotes you enter will be temporarily added to the dataset in the Table for comparison. Portfolios and watchlists can also be added to the Quotes Box.

The row selected in the Table affects what is shown in the Insight panel (right-side panel). If the Table and Chart are linked (which you can control through the Chart’s Settings menu), the row selected in the Table will automatically be charted.

Resizing, Collapsing, and Detaching Panels

All panels can be resized by dragging their edges with your cursor. Note that the Insight panel (right side panel) reaches a minimum width. Most panels, as well as subpanels like the Market Summary, can also be collapsed completely either by clicking the double arrow button:

To reopen the panel, click again on the double arrow button, or click anywhere on the blue bar that represents the collapsed panel, such as those called out below:

The Table is the only panel that cannot be collapsed.

Premium users have the ability to pop out or detach the Chart and Insight panels entirely, so that the Stock Rover screen can be spread out across multiple windows. Other Premium features, such as Notes, Portfolio Analysis, Portfolio Rebalancing, and Trade Planning, can also be detached from the home screen. To detach any detachable window, click this button:

Simply close the detached window to bring the panel or feature back into Stock Rover.

Start Menu

The Start menu, in the top left-hand corner of the screen, is a customizable list of actions that provides easy access to many tasks in Stock Rover. Use it to initiate actions such as creating a portfolio, opening the Investors’ Library, or setting up alerts. Most of the actions found in the Start menu can be accessed elsewhere in the program; however, some, such as opening the Investors’ Library, can only be accessed through the Start menu.

To start an action, simply click on its button from the menu:

You can also browse or search actions using the drop-down menu/search box in the lower left of the Start menu, called out below:

Once you become familiar with Stock Rover, you can customize the list by clicking ‘Customize’ in the lower right corner of the Start menu. The following window appears:

On the left, select which actions you want to appear in your Start menu. On the right, use the arrow buttons to set up the order in which you want the buttons to appear. You can make the list as long or as short as you like.

Right-Click Menus

Tooltips

Tooltips are informational boxes that appear when you hover over certain elements with your cursor. Stock Rover uses tooltips as a way to seamlessly deliver key information to you. For example, when you hover over a ticker in the Table, you’ll see the following tooltip:

These tooltips, as well as the Help and Navigation panel tooltips, can be turned off by going to Preferences in your account drop-down menu—see Stock Summary Tooltipsfor.

Drag-and-Drop

It is possible to reposition certain elements of the Stock Rover screen by dragging and dropping them. Column headers and Navigation panel rows can be repositioned simply by clicking on that item, dragging it to a new position with your cursor, and releasing it. Likewise, the edges of the panels in Stock Rover can be moved using drag-and-drop.

Drag-and-drop is also used to zoom in on a particular section of the Chart. Click and drag your cursor to the right over the section on which you wish to zoom in.

Currently, drag-and-drop is not supported in all corners of the program, even where repositioning is possible. For example, view tabs can be repositioned only through the ‘Move Left’ and ‘Move Right’ options in the view right-click menu.

Importing and Exporting

Portfolios, watchlists, and screeners can be exported to a .txt file and shared with other Stock Rover users or used as a backup copy. To export an item, right-click it and select ‘Export.’ To import a Stock Rover file, right-click it and select ‘Import,’ then navigate to the file on your computer to import it into Stock Rover.

Most portfolio files exported from brokerages can be imported into Stock Rover as well. Go here for instructions on importing a file downloaded from your brokerage.

Premium users also have the capability of exporting Table data (showing current columns and rows) to a CSV file. To do this, go to the Table’s Actions menu, select ‘Save As’ and then ‘Export Table as CSV File.’ Go here for screenshots of this process.

Additionally, context-specific help links exist throughout the Stock Rover program. Anytime you click on a question mark button like the one shown below, you’ll be taken to a relevant section in our How To pages.

For example, in the above screenshot, clicking the question mark button would take you to our help pages about the Quotes Box. Clicking a link in Stock Rover will always open up the linked page in a new tab in your browser.

The How To pages (where you are right now) offer step-by-step instructions for using Stock Rover—everything from importing a portfolio to updating a screener to changing your email preferences. Use the detailed navigation tree at the left side of these pages to find the help section you are looking for. You can also get to our Support Database and Video Library through the navigation tree.

The Support Database is a database or “knowledgebase” created from questions we have received from users. For example, where do we get our data from? What to do if Stock Rover doesn’t load properly? And does a portfolio in the Chart show dividend reinvestment? Use the support categories to help you find the answer you are looking for, or use the searchbox at the top of the Support Database to search for questions and answers containing a certain word or phrase.

The Video Library includes everything from short video tutorials on simple actions in Stock Rover to full recorded webinars that show real-world investing applications of Stock Rover, such as screening to find growth stocks or evaluating holdings in a portfolio.

You can also send out your question to the Stock Rover user community in our Support Forum, found in the Forums tab of Stock Rover Markets, our companion site to Stock Rover. Our Support staff regularly checks the Support Forum to respond to user queries.
